Road

Hierarchy: Archaeological object » Architecture » Public Buildings » Road system » Road

Scope note:

public street intended for transit and circulation of people, animals and vehicles. It gives access to various buildings and places of urban conglomeration, and is usually paved with polygonal blocks (basoli); a peculiar characteristic of the urban streets of Pompeii was the presenceof large stone blocks along the roadway, usually near the intersections that allowed pedestrians to cross from one pavement to another. These large blocks (one, three or five, depending on the width of the street), protected the passers-by from getting wet with rain water or, waste that went into the roadways, due to the lack of underground sewers.
