Scope note:

part of the theatre or amphitheatre reserved for the public, made up of rising stands one above the other and concentric, where the spectators could sit; it is normally divided into two or three horizontal sections by means of one or two external passageways (praecinctiones) that run along the stands and from where the access staircases lead; each section was subdivided into vertical wedge shaped partitions (cunei) by a certain number of radial stairways that went upwards from the lower seats to the top of the cavea; the lowest rows around the orchestra were reserved as honourary seats for people of higher status.
