capacity measure

Hierarchy: Archaeological object » Instrumentum » Instrumentum–Type » Measuring Tool » capacity measure

Scope note: each example of a series of one-handled glass bottles having a short cylindrical neck, parallelepiped or cubic, squared-section body and flat bottom. They were containers for liquids, and because of their diverse but consistent sizes (each was double the size of the one before), they were used as capacity measures; they were particularly common in houses in the Vesuvian area [also see “bottle”].
