Scope note:

the term commonly used to refer to the small pillars, that situated in a uniform order, supported the floor (the suspensura) of a heated room through the hypocaust system so that the hot air could freely circulate around them; they were made up of square or, at times circular bricks (20cm on each side); in the oldest Pompeiian hypocausts these pillars were substituted by long ceramic cylinders.
